Winchester, with its Cathedral, Castle, College and churches is unrivalled for medieval architecture, and the surrounding countryside is rich in historic villages and an abundance of country houses. This volume of The Buildings of England also includes monuments of unique national and international significance: Jane Austen’s house at Chawton; the spectacular French Imperial mausoleum at Farnborough Abbey; and Stanley Spencer’s moving series of war paintings for the chapel at Burghclere.

Michael Bullen is an architectural historian working as a conservation officer in Hampshire. John Crook is an architectural historian, archaeological consultant, and photographer. Rodney Hubbuck lived in Petersfield for many years and has a special interest in the architecture and stained glass of the South and South West.

"High praise is due to the authors of this volume for careful scholarship, an outstanding array of colour illustrations, and a literary style which is not drily academic, but relaxed and colloquial."—Bevis Hiller, The Spectator

"This new edition brings great improvements to what was already one of the best volumes in the series. As with many of the revised Pevsner’s, there is such a wealth of new material…This book is a remarkable achievement…Pevsner would have been delighted with this book."—Matthew Woodworth, Burlington Magazine

"A superb revised edition of Pevsner’s classic work…The writers depth of knowledge means that as a reference book it is hard to see it ever being equalled let alone surpassed."—Andrew Napier, Hampshire Chronicle

"The volume is exemplary in its scholarship."—Roger White, Historic House

“The book is a treasure-trove not just to visitors to the county but to historians interested in what is now called the ‘built environment’.”— Contemporary Review

“The new Pevsner for Hampshire draws on the widest range of disciplines – with no jostling – and for the medieval period is very good indeed.”—Tom Beaumont James, The Society for Medieval Archaeology
