Publication of this book, one of six devoted to the buildings of London, marks the completion of the long-awaited revision of the original Pevsner guides and brings the account of the capital’s buildings entirely up to date.

This fascinating volume provides a historical introduction to a uniquely diverse area as well as a detailed gazetteer of individual buildings. Along the Thames, relics of a powerful industrial and maritime past remain, and in the East End, Hawksmoor’s Baroque churches still tower over Georgian houses. The contributions of generations of immigrants are reflected in places of worship and cultural centers, while a century of social housing has produced architecture now of historic interest. Further out, medieval churches and country mansions stand among the suburban streets and proud civic buildings.

Sir Nikolaus Pevsner (1902–83) was founding editor of The Pelican History of Art and of The Buildings of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. Bridget Cherry became Pevsner’s research assistant in 1968, was series editor from 1971 to 2002, and is coauthor of London 2: South, London 3: North West, and London 4: North. Charles O’Brien has been an editor of the Pevsner Architectural Guides since 2002.

“Accessible, authoritative, and modestly priced, London 5: East will appeal to architectural and urban historians and all those who love London. A splendid achievement. Highly recommended.”—Choice

"... buy this volume and head east"---Cornerstone

"London 5: East remains a hugely impressive achievement and an essential recommendation to anyone wanting to explore this diverse and fascinating district of London in detail."---Country Life

'This book is, for me, at least, a revelation. Walking the two miles home, the Mile End Road has become a different street; a hundred anonymous buildings had become living, friendly, complex faces. A perfect London Sunday, thanks to Pevsner.' - Christopher Woodward, The Spectator

"A number of books on various areas of the East End have been published in recent months. This is by far and away the best for anyone interested in the history of East London and its buildings." —Denise Silvester-Carr, What’s On in London

"Bridget Cherry and Charles O'Brien...succeed brilliantly in conveying the details of the architecture along with the human and social aspects that are bound up with it." - Andrew Byrne, Times Literary Supplement

‘As always with the Pevsner volumes, and those of the London series in particular, the gazetteer is preceded by much extremely helpful material on the crucial social, economic and indeed ethnic background’---Roger White, Historic House
