This authoritative survey of east Suffolk includes some of England’s most beautiful landscapes, including “Constable Country,” the land surrounding the River Stour that was home to John Constable. East Suffolk’s rural landscape includes a variety of intriguing medieval buildings: brick and timber-framed houses, stunning churches, and the grand castles of Orford and Framlingham. Additionally, Suffolk’s coast is home to a number of charming resorts, as well as the Viking ship burial site at Sutton Hoo. This volume also includes the town of Ipswich, where medieval buildings are situated alongside Norman Foster’s offices for Willis Faber, one of the major works of 20th-century British architecture.

James Bettley is a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and chairman of the Chelmsford Diocesan Committee for the Care of Churches. He is the author of Essex (Buildings of England).

‘… an immense contribution to the study of Suffolk’s architecture. Everyone interested in the county’s buildings will find something to cure their ignorance, inform their curiosity and stimulate their interest. And for the best travelled, there will be surprises and revelations, even in the photographs.’—John Goodall, Country Life.

‘James Bettley is proving to be one of Pevsner’s most respectful successors…’
—Gillian Darley, the Guardian.

‘… the most ambitious recent Pevsner revision, with so many new entries it has been divided into east and west, each well over 600 pages. The illustrations, almost all taken by Paul Highnam, are a consistent triumph, capturing every building in a revealing light’—Marcus Binney, the Times.

“This new ‘Pevsner’ for Suffolk has a much higher level of scholarship and as a result is greatly expanded… I would strongly recommend.”—John Walker, Vernacular Architecture

“Much of the additional material and on both rural and urban buildings represents original research, well presented and well-illustrated and from documentary archives… Reason enough for even the seasoned professional to reach for the Pevsner before tackling the internet.”—Leigh Alston, Landscape History
