This is the first book created primarily for the field identification of parrots, one of the most familiar and colorful groups of birds. From the mighty macaws to the diminutive pygmy parrots, the 350 species of parrots include cockatoos, parakeets, lovebirds, and Budgerigar. Most are brightly colored or even gaudy, but a few are drab, and some are nocturnal and flightless. Parrots, found throughout most of the warmer regions of the world, occur in greatest numbers in Australasia and South America.

This book includes 88 superb color illustrations of every species and most identifiable subspecies of parrot, as well as range maps of their locations. It offers many first-hand insights into the ecology of each species, vocalizations, life cycle characteristics, and geographical variation. It also provides up-to-date information on the conservation status of those species of parrots that are threatened or endangered.

Tony Juniper was formerly the parrot conservation officer of ICBP (now BirdLife International). He is currently the campaign director of Friends of the Earth. Michael Parr is director of international development with the American Bird Conservancy.

"Any definitive collection of bird reference books will want to include this gorgeous, in-depth coverage."—Bookwatch

"For parrot enthusiasts and collectors of books about birds, this volume is a required addition to the library. . . . The plates and information in it should make it possible to identify any parrot seen anywhere in the world."—Bird Watcher's Digest

"In this excellent book on the field identification of parrots, Juniper and Parr meet a need in the birding world. . . . Highly recommended for all libraries. General readers; undergraduates through faculty; two-year technical program students."—Choice

"The name field guide hardly does justice to these lavishly illustrated and comprehensive volumes. . . This book is very highly recommended for anyone with an interest in parrots, birds or nature."—Wildlife Activist

"A definite must for parrot aficionados and amateurs alike. . . . A comprehensive volume to help in the identification of the most endangered species of bird in the world: the parrot."—Patricia Dibsie, San Diego Union-Tribune

"This fine . . . book . . . is unique in that it is the first ever written to be used primarily as a field guide to all the world’s parrots. . . . The book contains a hefty amount of engrossing information. . . . While, at first glance . . . might appear to be of more value to the scientist or traveling bird-watcher than the dedicated bird-watcher than the dedicated breeder or pet enthusiast, this is far from the case. The book’s excellent in-depth information on every aspect of the wild birds can only enhance one’s all-round understanding and appreciation for the best husbandry techniques to employ with captive stock. The sheer quality of this important work, surely destined to become a classic quick reference identification and conservation guide on parrots, can be gauged by the fact that, once picked up, even a staunch finch and softbill enthusiast will have difficulty putting it down."—Ian Hinze, Bird Talk

"A well-organized and highly useful reference. . . . I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in parrots."—Susan L. Clubb, Quarterly Review of Biology

"Parrots is an excellent reference and field guide to the diversity of parrot species; anyone interested in ornithology should purchase this volume."—Ben S. Roesch, Cryptozoology Review
