  • Supplements to the Book

The idea to add supplementary texts to this website grew out of a very practical necessity and a personal choice. Yale University Press wanted to limit the size of the printed text of Another Kind of War for economic, educational, and scholarly reasons. Much of the required cutting came from paring down discussions, removing some examples within longer considerations, and radically restricting the footnotes to exclude much beyond direct citations to quotations and specific figures. However, in several cases, entire sections were removed from the book. Loath to jettison them altogether, I offer several of these sections as supplements the text of Another Kind of War. These supplements are under copyright, but free for all to read here. Also, instructors, including myself, can refer students to texts here as additional reading that fits in their courses or readings.

    The supplements include:

    1. Lynn essay, “Terrorism as War”
    2. Chapter 3—American Razzias: Combating the Philippine Insurrection
    3. Chapter 4—Nazi Ethnic Cleansing and Genocide, 1933-1945
    4. Chapter 5—Rebellion and Riot before the French Revolution
    5. Chapter 5—The American Anarchists
    6. Chapter 6 –The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam
    7. Chapter 8 –The German Red Army Factions
    8. Chapter 13—The Shining Path
