An innovative, internationally developed system to help advance science learning and instruction for high school students

This book tells the story of a $3.6 million research project funded by the National Science Foundation aimed at increasing scientific literacy and addressing global concerns of declining science engagement. Studying dozens of classrooms across the United States and Finland, this international team combines large-scale studies with intensive interviews from teachers and students to examine how to transform science education. Written for teachers, parents, policymakers, and researchers, this book offers solutions for matching science learning and instruction with newly recommended twenty-first-century standards. Included are science activities that engage and inspire students; sample lesson plans; and approaches for measuring science engagement and encouragement of three-dimensional learning.

Barbara Schneider is professor of education and sociology at Michigan State University. Joseph Krajcik is professor and director of CREATE for STEM at Michigan State University. Jari Lavonen is professor of physics and chemistry education and department head at the University of Helsinki. Katariina Salmela-Aro is professor of educational sciences and psychology at the University of Helsinki. Margaret J. Geller is senior scientist, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

Learning Science provides international examples illustrating how to capture students’ imagination and wonder through project-based learning. Teachers, researchers and policymakers will learn concrete strategies for increasing student engagement in science.”—Katherine L. McNeill, coauthor of Supporting grade 5-8 students in constructing explanations in science: The claim, evidence and reasoning framework for talk and writing

Learning Science argues convincingly why engagement is so important in science learning and how it can be achieved. It should be required reading for every science teacher and school administrator.”—David Fortus, Weizmann Institute of Science

“Here’s your invitation to join the conversation about reforming science education frameworks and learning environments. Learning Science scratches below the surface, exploring the minds of teachers and students, and suggests much-needed STEM education advancements.”— Richard A Duschl, Texas Instruments Distinguished Chair, Southern Methodist University

"Learning Science shows in an excellent way how research on motivation and learning can help to develop interventions to increase learners’ interest in STEM subjects. In particular, these interventions are needed to increase women’s motivation to enter STEM fields."—Sari Lindblom, University of Helsinki

"Learning Science is an essential read for researchers and education practitioners who are interested in how project-based learning in science plays out in two quite different national contexts."—Ronald Marx, University of Arizona

Learning Science details an international, large-scale reform project that aligns curriculum, assessment, and teacher professional development with an up-to-date vision of science education and a rigorous and innovativeevaluation. This book yields exciting findings for student learning and engagement.”—Knut Neumann, Leibniz Institute for Science and Mathematics Education
