Millions of people—many of them younger than we care to believe—are living in the aftermath of a heart attack, and it is vital for them to learn how to reduce the risk factors for subsequent heart problems. This unique and important book offers advice to survivors of a heart attack and also to those trying to prevent the onset of a heart attack. Contributors include not only distinguished medical professionals but also eleven individuals who either participated in a cardiac rehabilitation program or designed a program of their own. The patients—men and women of varied ages and ethnic backgrounds—relate their own histories, providing insight into the many faces of heart disease and inspiration and hope for other heart attack survivors.

The book includes:
• risk factors
• diets, diagnosis, and treatment
• ways to prevent angina from becoming a heart attack
• strategies for reversing coronary artery disease
• guidelines for choosing a cardiac rehabilitation program
• a description of cardiac rehabilitation in action

Kathleen Berra, clinical trial director at the Stanford Center for Research in Disease Prevention, is cofounder of one of the first cardiac rehabilitation programs in the United States. Gerald W. Friedland is professor emeritus of radiology, Stanford University School of Medicine. Francis H. Koch is a consulting cardiologist to the Cardiac Therapy Foundation of the Midpeninsula, Palo Alto.

Published under the auspices of the Cardiac Therapy Foundation of the Midpeninsula, Palo Alto, California.

“Though [Heart Attack] contains informative chapters by experts, it is not a medical text but a highly readable collection of stories—of people who suffered the physical and emotional shock of their life and, with dedication and discipline, recovered to take up their lives again.”—Diana Reynolds Roome, Mountain View Voice

“This book is the first we have read that is written from the point of view of a group of patients, and reading it is like walking into a support group and talking to real people. There is something for everyone—from patients and their families to each member of the team of medical professionals who offer help to them.”—Libby and Dave Walker, cardiac rehabilitation patients, Scottsdale, Arizona

“A wonderful book that should be invaluable for patients and their physicians.”—Philip R. Lee, M.D., Senior Scholar, Institute for Health Policy Studies, School of Medicine, UCSF, and Assistant Secretary for Health in the Johnson and Clinton Administrations

“This eminently readable book offers a new and valuable perspective to patients with coronary disease.”—Nanette K. Wenger, M.D., professor of cardiology, Emory University School of Medicine

“This encouraging—and empowering—book presents easily understandable guidance for those wanting to avoid disability or worse from coronary disease, still the major killer in developed countries. Up to date therapies with strong scientific proof are presented in a practical approach that emphasizes the importance and rewards of the individuals defining his or her personal program.”—Samuel M. Fox III, M.D., Past President, American College of Cardiology and former Director of Heart Disease Prevention, Georgetown University and prior to that chief, Heart Disease and Stroke Control Program of the U.S. Public Health Service

“What distinguishes this title from other guides on preventing and treating heart disease is its down-to-earth sharing of individual stories. . . . Every public library and consumer health collection should purchase a copy.”—Library Journal

“[An] informative book on the current state of the diagnosis and treatment of heart attacks.”—Booklist
