A New Hymnal for Colleges and Schools is a nondenominational, ecumenical collection of over 400 hymns and 100 psalms designed especially for worship services in academic communities. Hymns and spiritual songs are drawn from many countries and many different traditions. A number of hymns appear in their original languages, as well as in English translations.

Throughout the hymnal, gender-inclusive language is used wherever possible. The psalms, for example, depend heavily on inclusive-language versions prepared by the United Methodist Church and the National Council of Churches. Also included are many hymns written in the past quarter-century, as well as new texts and music commissioned especially for this collection. The ample selection of hymns by Americans includes the work of hymn writers, composers, and authors such as Aaron Copland, Emma Lou Diemer, Alice Parker, Virgil Thomson, Richard Proulx, Robert Frost, and John Updike.

Jeffery Rowthorn, hymn writer and liturgist, was for many years chapel minister at The Yale University Divinity School and is now suffragan bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut. Russell Schulz-Widmar is professor of church music at the Episcopal Theological Seminary of the Southwest and director of music at the University United Methodist Church in Austin, Texas.

"A very impressive collection. . . . Such a broad spectrum of hymns from the traditional to the contemporary. This is an extremely useful book for schools, choirs, organists, and anyone interested in hymns."—Mary-Louise Nash, member, American Guild of Organists; president, Commission for Pastoral Liturgy, Roman Catholic Diocese of Cleveland

"A New Hymnal for Colleges and Schools is truly universal. A wonderful assembly of poetry and music, including composers such as Orlando Gibbons and William Albright and poets like George Herbert and Richard Wilbur, together with hymns of the renewal movement and a diversity of psalms. May it flourish!"—Dr. Alec Wyton

"A New Hymnal for Colleges and Schools explores inclusivity in congregational song which goes beyond concerns related to language. Its editors have taken care to reflect an experience of interfaith worship which has expanded dramatically since its predecessor, Hymnal for Colleges and Schools, was published in 1956. Without imposing unyielding policy regarding language, the editors have provided innovative solutions to questions inevitably raised when making contemporary use of words crafted in other times and places. In addition to the wide historical range and the stylistic variety of both texts and music, this hymnal includes texts by authors (William Blake, Robert Frost, and John Updike) and composers (Vincent Persichetti, Alice Parker, and Aaron Copland) seldom included in denominational hymnals."—Dr. Carol Doran, associate professor of worship and pastoral music, Colgate Rochester Divinity School

"Colleges and schools will welcome this new hymnal. In breadth of selection, quality of text and tune, in suitability to the particular demands of worship in academic settings, it has no equal."—William H. Willimon, dean of the chapel and professor of Christian ministry, Duke University

"Judicious extracts from this wide-ranging volume can profitably supplement any congregation's customary diet of praise, or enhance sermons."—Hugh McKellar, Anglican Journal

"Interdenominational and ecumenical, [this book] contains a diverse collection of more than four hundred hymns and one hundred psalm settings. . . . This is an outstanding hymnal. . . . This work is highly recommended. It should be on every choir director's shelf, not to collect dust, but to be used."—William Tortolano, Pastoral Music

"Here is a volume whose editors have compiled a collection of the old and the new which fairly sings with the richness of the Biblical faith. Its ecumenical character and catholic flavor commend it for use in a variety of academic settings and wherever the inclusiveness of the faith community is celebrated."—George W. Gunn, Worship Works

"A hymnal with songs of lasting value. The scholarship, the editing, [and] the collection of hymns is well done. . . . [The editors] have provided a good selection of service music, psalm tones that are singable along with a pointing system that is simple to understand, and most of all a wonderful collection of hymns from a wise variety of sources and traditions."—Terry MacArthur, Ecumenical Review

"The quality of both music and text is praiseworthy. The organization of the hymnal was designed for the needs of academic communities, and worship leaders should have no trouble finding appropriate selections. Highly recommended."—The American Organist

"The indices are excellent and provide easy access to tunes, composers, sources, first lines, etc. The music is well printed; the pages are clean and legible and page turns are few. This hymnal would certainly be a welcome addition to any college, school, or parish choir."—M. Benedicta Berendes, Modern Liturgy
