Tidal
A moth hove out of fog. All I heard
was the incessant dissolving
of the surf, attenuated, drawn
through eggshell, bone and ash
as through the walls of another room.
After dark, before a glass,
in a hall reeling with shadows,
a pair of eyes resolved. At last
they shone: they shone
like phosphorescent moons.
Daniel Hall was born in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, in 1952 and grew up in western Massachusetts. A graduate of Classical High School in Springfield, Massachusetts, Hall has lived and worked in Alaska and throughout the United States. He has also traveled extensively in China and the British Isles. In 1986 he was the winner of the "Discovery"/The Nation competition. A current resident of Amherst, Massachusetts, hall works as a freelance indexer and writer. His poems have appeared in The New Yorker, Southwest Review, the Nation, and the Yale Review.
